Listening Initiative

About

Sigisora is a Jakarta-based listening initiative founded in 2024, working with sound and space to engage sociopolitical dimensions through community-based and artistic practices. Our artistic practice unfolds through field recordings, compositions and sound journals: positioning sound as a fundamental material for artistic inquiry, as a medium for transformation across different art forms, and as an alternative form of knowledge production. We move beyond positivist frameworks of noise and ecological disasters solely as measurable disturbances and instead approach it as part of the region’s vitality. This flows into our practice of counterarchiving: where we question the aftermath of listening made to be ‘categorized’ and become lifeless artifacts, rather, sound acts as openings: sparking memories, counter-narratives, and new associations. Centering on engaging the local community, listening extends beyond documentation into a shared authorship.

Sigisora has been involved in various festivals, residencies, and public presentations, including Listening Biennial (Jakarta, 2025), Arkipel International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival (Jakarta, 2024 & 2025), Syntopia International Symposium of Media Arts and Design (Chiang Mai University, 2025), Sintas Loka Festival (Forum Sudutpandang, Palu, 2024), Bangsal Menggawe “Water Montage” Residency (Komunitas Pasirputih, North Lombok, 2024), “Taki Boke” Residency (Pitusinema; Bunyi Cicak, Mamuju, South Sulawesi, 2026) and Time to Listen Symposium (Field Notes Berlin, 2024). Sigisora is currently developing Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities (Jakarta & Istanbul), a collaborative research project with Urban Koop (Istanbul) and the University of Aberdeen (Scotland), supported by the British Academy.
