Bunyicicak Lab and Pitu Sinema have invited Sigisora to participate in an (interconnected) artistic research program seeking to understand the everyday cultures and continuity of Mamuju, the capital of West Sulawesi. Taki Bose: Memories of Tomorrow, where the phrase “Taki Bose” itself is a call to row, highlights and documented the local knowledge of coastal communities on Karampuang Island. The project is complementary to the Liminal Dots residency, where the program seeks to draw a line of (dis/)continuity from highland to coastal cultures of Mamuju, tracing the region of Kalumpang to Karampuang. These two projects ultimately brought together artists and local communities through a shared process of learning and making.
Throughout our time in Kalumpang, one place was repeatedly mentioned in conversations with Pak Carlos, Pak Rumaya, Bu Marlin, and other residents: Sampaga. Through their memories, we learned that Sampaga had once served as an important stop along the Karama River before much of it disappeared due to coastal erosion. These stories revealed how collective memory can preserve the presence of a place even after its physical landscape has changed. This experience became one of the starting points for the sound work developed during the residency.
Continuing to Karampuang Island, together with local residents, we met Pak Parno and many others who shared their experiences of coastal life, electricity shortages, and the transformations taking place on the island amidst development. Conversations about the proposed bridge connecting Karampuang to the mainland, local fishing knowledge, and the story of Taki Bose challenges the state’s overwhelming grand narratives of development. For us, listening once again emerges as a crucial act that is not limited to being a research method, but is about building relationships with one another rooted in collective experience.
